Why we Need Jason Williams as New Orleans District Attorney
Politics is an interesting beast here in the city of New Orleans. Every couple of years, we are inundated with the typical parade of political operatives who stream forth with promises of a new and improved way of doing business in the Crescent City. Almost never do we actually see any of that come to fruition. However, this time I believe one candidate presents that actual change we hear about: his name is Jason Williams and he should be our next District Attorney.
For far too long in the history of New Orleans, the DA’s office presented itself as a symbol of racism and suppression. It has been a hotspot for corrupt practice, unfair prosecutions, unequal treatment, and violations of constitutional freedoms and basic human decency. These seem like strong words but ask our disenfranchised communities and they will provide ample stories and examples that prove that point.
Jason presents a change to that system unseen and unheard in this City. He presents a meaningful platform that lays out systemic changes that will actually give our most impoverished a chance as it relates to their interactions with the Criminal Justice System. It also outlines a plan that most importantly pools resources and allows our prosecutors to focus on more serious crimes. If we can focus our resources on helping those who need our help, we can focus our attention of stopping those who victimize our communities. For far too long, our resources have been imprudently and improperly focused on low level nonviolent offenses. A wise man once told me that we build our cages for lions and tigers, not rabbits and squirrels. For far too long, we have been filling our cages with rabbits and squirrels while lions and tigers run rampant in our city.
Jason will provide an office that can focus on making sure that we treat out disadvantaged communities with the respect and dignity they deserve. These policies will help those who need assistance. It will allow our city to heal the scars that have long cut across our most disenfranchised populations. It will allow trust to develop in our DA and it will give us the breathing room we need to focus our attention on violent offenders. We cannot hope to make meaningful change in this City without first treating each other with the respect and dignity we all deserve. Once we build our communities back up and alleviate the stigma and persecution off of nonviolent low-level crimes, we can grow as a City. As that growth continues, we can expect to see less tolerance of old behavior and systemic change as it relates to the way our communities are policed and protected.
Please join me on December 5th to vote for Jason Williams for DA. He is the change our city needs. He is the change our system needs. He is the change our people need. You can read more about his platform at https://www.runwithjason.com/.
